Meri Kirihimete from Villainesse

It’s hard to know how to describe 2017. The year of female anger? The year when shitty things that have been happening to women for time immemorial finally got exposed and people started giving a fuck about them? The year when we endured one of the most sexist local elections in a long time and miraculously ended up with a female Prime Minister? At this stage I’m not quite sure which way is up. I suspect I’ll still be processing the fallout in July.

One thing is for certain – we all deserve a rest. From the Women’s March right through to the #MeToo movement, women have been working hard throughout the year. It’s time for us to kick back, relax and quietly start plotting the next phase of the Super Secret Feminist Plot To Overthrow Men And Take Over The World. (Joooooookes. Sort of.)

On that; Villainesse will be taking a break over the next month. We’ll be bringing you our Top 30 countdown of the most read stories of 2017 from tomorrow until we start serving up fresh content again from the 22nd of January. We’ll be spending the break making a little webseries called The REAL Sex Talk, which we’re super excited to present as part of our 2018 line-up. We’ll also be trying to do some sleeping, which we haven’t done much of in 2017.

Next year there will be a few changes afoot. We’ll welcome some awesome new people into new roles and farewell some similarly awesome people from old roles. We’ll be building on the work of the last nearly three years (gulp – time flies) to make Villainesse even stronger. We can’t wait to get started.

But before that, we want to wish you a merry Christmas, a happy New Year, and a safe and relaxing break.

And I also want to add a quick personal note. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for all of the support you have given to Villainesse this year, and over the last three years. When I started a little blog in 2015, completely naively and idealistically, I could not have imagined that we’d win a Canon Media Award, be named a finalist for another, make a couple of massive campaigns and be about to make a webseries for teens about sex, respect, consent and a number of other issues that are close to my heart. It’s been a wild ride, and none of it would have been possible without you.

Thank you, kia ora, meri Kirihimete, and see you in January!

Lizzie x
